Getting savvy about ‘smart’ timepieces Manila Bulletin – Wed, Jan 8, 2014
With gadgets like smartphones capable of telling time, are watches still practical accessories to use nowadays? Apparently, the answer is yes.

watches As a wearable item, there are various reasons why people buy watches for their own perusal. Some treat them as investment pieces, while others see them as accents for their outfits. Clearly, a watch is more than just a timepiece, and it still remains relevant in today’s more digitalized society.

replica patek philippe calatrava Globally, the Citigroup reveals that the watch industry has managed to muster USD60 billion in sales last year. And one key player that is gaining traction in the worldwide timepiece scene is the smartwatch.

replica patek philippe nautilus A smartwatch, by definition, is a computerized wristwatch that has features apart from basic timekeeping. These days, modern smartwatches can be linked to smartphones (usually via Bluetooth), where their users can keep tabs on their phone’s status on their wrists.

replica patek philippe calatrava For 2014, the New York Times writer Nick Bilton says that one of the trends to watch for in technology is the arrival of better-looking smartwatches. In his report, “Disruptions: Coming in 2014: Extremely Smart Watches and Wearable TV’s,” he even wrote that Apple is expected to announce its “long-awaited” smartwatch this year.

replica patek philippe calatrava “Smartwatches will allow us to peer at messages without having to pull cellphones out of our pockets or purses,” writes Bilton. “They will make it easier to monitor our health with heartbeat and movement sensors, recording daily how much we have exercised, or how much we haven’t.”

patek philippe watches Compared to more developed countries like the US, the Philippines has yet to fully catch up with the smartwatch trend. However, some savvy business folks have already started bringing in fashionable smartwatches into the Philippine retail scene.

One of them is Hans Kenner Fernandez, the president of Thinkscape, the local distributor of Cookoo watches in the Philippines. According to Fernandez, his group saw the potential of fashionable smartwatches among Filipino consumers.

“The thing with traditional smartwatches is that they tend to look geeky, to the point that they’re not fashionable for some,” says Fernandez. “Most of them just have a rectangular shape.”

Cookoo smartwatches, according to Fernandez, bridge the gap between fashion and technology by introducing models that come in different colors and shapes that can be matched with various casual ensembles.

But more than the playful looks lent by the brand’s smartwatches, Fernandez says that a Cookoo smartwatch can be practical. By linking one with a compatible smartphone, a user can check if s/he received tweets, calls, emails, and messages on his/her wristwatch. Through an app, a Cookoo user can also take a selfie, using a button on the smartwatch as a photo trigger linked with the smartphone’s camera. Although, Fernandez clarifies that a Cookoo watch is not capable of answering messages and phone calls back yet.

“A smartwatch can be useful if you need to check your cellphone’s status discreetly, and this may come in handy if you’re in a meeting” he says. “Through your smartwatch, you can see if you received anything without pulling out your cellphone.”

One of the downsides of a smartwatch, though, is that it doesn’t increase in value. “Smartwatches are subject to be superseded by newer models, which is typical in technology,” says Fernandez.

When it comes to retail, Fernandez also discloses that Cookoo smartwatches are sold in technology shops, and not in watch stores, as smartwatches have a tendency to outshine or outsell traditional watches.

But, as Fernandez says, there will always be room for traditional watches despite the development of smartwatches. “When it comes to traditional watches, you really can’t beat the brands that have been around for a long time because they have a history of heritage already. I think that smartwatches would complement the development of the watch industry, as it is the next move that traditional watch brands could pursue,” shares Fernandez.

Fernandez is optimistic about Cookoo’s growth in the Philippine market. He reveals that while Filipinos have yet to fully appreciate the allure of smartwatches, there has been a growing sense of curiosity already about them among watch enthusiasts locally.

But it’s not just Cookoo that’s confident about tapping the potential of Filipino buyers. Another brand that’s been making the rounds in the country is Phosphor, an American watch brand.

“Phosphor is a watch brand for the ‘Fashionably Techie’,” says Melissa Racela, president of Phosphor Philippines. “The brand skillfully blends design and technology to craft the ultimate fashion timepiece. Filipinos want to be updated with the latest technology in watches.”

While the brand has veered away from the typical smartwatch bandwagon, Racela reveals that Phosphor will soon launch a “smarter” watch, the Phosphor Touch Time Watch line.

“It is a next generation digital watch with a touch screen, smartphone-like watch apps, ‘always-on’ display, and you never need to charge it.” The models in this line have features such as six different alarms, a calendar and an organizer, a calculator, among others.

Racela points out that a watch should both be fashionable and functional. “It’s much better if a watch offers unique and advanced technology which makes it a conversation piece as well,” she adds.

On a larger scale, Fernandez surmises that smartwatches are here to stay. But, at the end of the day, it’s still up to us whether we make the switch or not from wearing traditional watches to modern smartwatches.

After all, as Racela would put it, a watch becomes a valuable buy if one is satisfied with a particular timepiece. “A watch will only be worthwhile if you’re happy with the design, durability, unique technology, and also the after-sales service that the watch brand has to offer,” she relates.
