Alcatraz is a small, rocky island in the middle of San Francisco Bay. It has been, as various points in its history, the first lighthouse on the West Coast, a penitentiary, and a Civil War fortress. It was also, in the 1960s and 70s, taken over by a group of Native Americans. The audio tour of the penitentiary is great. Former inmates and guards were interviewed, and their stories are told to background noises that make you feel as if you were there at that time.
There are too many nerdy spots to show you (Over 1000!) in the current map view.
